Are you ready to unleash your inner designer and FINALLY tackle that space that has been on your “TO DO” list for way too long? We've created these 7 steps to help you accomplish just that!  We know you want to achieve more, do more, be more, but sometimes life just gets in the way.  We totally feel you. You’re not alone.  These 7 steps are going to help you break out of any rut and create your dream space all by yourself.  Take your time yet stay focused on your end goal ~ the most beautiful room ever, designed by you!

The first rule of thumb is to commit to the process.  Make the decision to tackle each step, come life, death, weather or in-laws.  You deserve this.  This is for YOU.  Accept this as a challenge and rock it!!

What room would you like to redesign?  Are you ~

    • Creating a home spa?
    • Redesigning your office?
    • Tackling a dated bathroom or laundry area?
    • Envisioning an outdoor oasis?

In order to unleash your creativity, you need to let go of self judgment.  This is really about impressing yourself with what you can accomplish ~ deep breaths and baby steps.  OR if your motivation is strong dive right in!  No one is grading you.  The only way to fail is to quit. If you get stuck just move on to the next step.  It’s important to keep up your momentum.  Continue to follow along at your pace - we know, life happens - and keep taking action.  Stick to the 7 steps and see how things begin to unfold.  This is all about you giving your space a BIG, BEAUTIFUL transformation, and design should be fun!  So roll up your sleeves, put on your favorite podcast and don’t over think it.  (I use my intuition when it comes to design).  In this case it is not about the journey but the DESTINATION - your room wonderfully designed by YOU!

Here is your mission to transform your space and free your inner designer!  Ready to get started? YAY!  Let’s do this....!

STEP #1 – ASSESS YOUR SPACE

Take a look around your chosen room and envision the possibilities. What does the room of your dreams look like?  You’re here to make that happen yet let’s be realistic.  What will the function of this room be and how will it enhance your lifestyle?  Does your budget fit your vision?  What things can you change and what is not going to happen?  If new flooring is not an option, let that dream die and focus on other elements.  Use your imagination, make notes and TAKE BEFORE PHOTOS!!

    STEP #2 – DECLUTTER & ORGANIZE

It's time to roll up your sleeves and declutter!  (You knew this was going to be one of the steps).  Let’s get this one out of the way so you can unleash your inner decorator. Get intentional - What works? What doesn’t?  Would it look better in another room (or maybe the closet)?  Start with 3 objectives ~ What STAYS?  What GOES?  What can be DONATED OR REPURPOSED?  Great designers think outside the box.  If it is something special you hate to part with, can it be painted or upcycled?  Clearing out unnecessary items will pave the way for a fresh new look. FOCUS!!

STEP #3 – DEFINE YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE

What's your Interior Design style?  For this step we're diving deep into defining your aesthetic preferences.  Gather inspiration and start honing in on the look and feel you want to achieve.  Are you a little bit country?  Or little bit rock ‘n roll?  Are you a minimalist?  A mid century enthusiast?  Do you like the quiet luxury of neutrals?  What COLORS speak to you?                  BE INSPIRED!

*Designer Tip - Eclectic Design is a mixture of the old and new with different design styles.  It really takes a trained eye or professional Designer to pull this off.  If you're going to go for it, at least keep some consistency with pattern, colors etc.

STEP #4 – LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Nothing sets the mood and changes the atmosphere of a space more than paint and lighting. The 2 go hand in hand. Both are relatively inexpensive and less intrusive than a renovation. Both offer dramatic results!   When considering natural and artificial light, explore different options to create ambiance, such as task and mood lighting.  Do you prefer warm tones or cool?  I like to pair a warm floor with cool walls or vice versa.  This step is worth taking your time on and even consulting a professional.  BE FEARLESS YET WISE.

*Designer Tip 1 - COLOR - Use the 60-30-10 Rule - 60% of your room is ONE color, 30% a supporting or contrasting color, & 10 % is your accent color.

*Designer Tip 2 - Start at the home improvement stores for many different paint sample options & stylish, affordable lighting.  This is where you can save some money to spend on the fun stuff later, or invest in a professional Painter.

    STEP #5 – TEXTILES & SOFT GOODS

In this step we're exploring the power of rugs, curtains, throws and show pillows!  This is where you get to have fun and your man’s worst nightmares come true.  Learn how opposites attract - on the color wheel.  Discover how to layer textures, mix patterns, and add pops of color to elevate your space.  SHOW OFF YOUR STYLE!

*Designer Tip 1- CURTAINS - Hang ‘em high!   Look for 98” inch curtains not 84”. (Ikea)

*Designer Tip 2 - Try not to play it safe and be too 'matchy', 'matchy'.  EXPLORE!

    STEP #6 – FURNISHINGS

Rule #1 - make sure the furniture is in proportion to the space.

Rule #2 - goes back to Lifestyle.  What furnishings will serve the room’s main purpose?  This is where aesthetics meet form and function.

Rule #3 - What is your budget?

$- Renew, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, Thrift.

$$ - Wayfair, Amazon, Target, Walmart, Ikea.

$$$ - Upscale Retail, ex: Crate & Barrell, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn,  West Elm,  Ballards.

$$$$ - To-The-Trade - It pays to work with a Professional Designer. Receive designer discounts on custom furniture and items not available to the general public!

*Designer Tip - Don’t be afraid to splurge on a large item like a sofa, repurpose special pieces and mix in some vintage finds!

    STEP #7- ACCESSORIES

Congratulations on reaching the final step in your room transformation challenge!  Now let’s have some real fun!!

Where furniture helps to define a space, and textiles tie together different elements like the color palette, Accessories add the pop and wow factors!  From table top accents, to wall art, to books and decorative boxes, these are the special touches that really make your space your own.  Nothing elevates a space more than plants, living or not.  Fake foliage is a designer’s best friend.  Be creative here and play around.

*Designer Tip 1 - ART WORK - Hang 60 inches from the floor. Most people hang their art work way too high.  Try stacking pictures (60 inches to the center point), or making collages.  For large collages, we usually lay them out first on a 5 x 7 rug.

*Designer Tip 2 - Display elements in ODD numbers like groupings of 3 or 5.  Secret Sauce!

FINALLY  ~ SEE AND FEEL YOUR DREAM ROOM COME TO LIFE!!

I really hope these 7 Steps have helped you see what's possible and that you are satisfied, if not over the moon, with what you have created?!  Go back and look at your BEFORE PHOTOS to see how far you have come.  Taking time to create change in our lives can set us on a new trajectory.  It’s so exciting to think about!
