The Power of the Consultation - Who, What, Where, When & Why, Why, Why

The CONSULTATION , such a simple concept yet open to so much interpretation.  Especially with design firms charging anywhere from four figures to the “free” Consultation, it’s hard to grasp what exactly to expect.  Who?  What?  Where?  When?  And Why, Why, Why?  In the mix of a thousand answers I would like to breakdown how Consultations work at Kerry F. Décor.

    WHO

    Everyone benefits from a Consultation.

Home Owners wanting to tackle a remodel or refurbishment and any decorating or design should always consult with a professional before beginning projects.  Even if you plan on DIYing it a Consultation can save you a lot of time and money.  We will provide you with valuable information like a list of top trades people.  We can also advise on color, space planning and prioritizing your budget.

Home Sellers and R.E. Agents can benefit from our Staging and Styling advice when preparing a home for top resale value.  A Realtor will want to secure the listing and not want to offend their client.  We can offer non- judgmental advice from a Buyers perspective.  And we can help you save on doing those necessary upgrades when Staging alone is not enough.  Even when inventory is low, not many people want to buy an ugly house that needs work.  According to the National Association of Realtors 96% of ALL Buyers use the internet to shop for a home!  Your photos better be spectacular.

    WHAT

So what exactly happens at the Consultation?  Each Designer will differ.

A ‘free’ Consultation might not be more than a hasty meet & greet or big sales pitch.  At K.F.D. we start at $250 for up to 2 hours of Consulting.  You are paying for our time therefore we don’t have to pressure you to choose our company.  We will have already done a complimentary phone call to see if we can meet each other’s needs.  And we may have shared some photos and a Lifestyle questionnaire.  Now it’s time to feel if we’re a good fit for each other once we‘re in your space and meet in person.

(I can tell you horror stories of going to a Consultation and getting caught in the middle of couples fighting.  I’m not a marriage counselor and play neutral Switzerland.  However, I know immediately the pair is not in agreement and I don’t do drama!  No amount of money is worth that.)

We usually bring things like color, fabric &/or textile samples, photos and other information relevant to what we’ve talked about.  A budget range has already been discussed and we present different ways you can work with us.

Sometimes the client has a totally different concept or is on a one note design style from years ago.  And that is definitely not our client.  Other times you just click and you know instantly you want to work together!

If we’re working with a Seller and/or their agent we can provide you with a list of priorities to get the house ready for sale.  We’ll discuss the best ways to work with your budget and how to maximize your home’s WOW factor!

For Vacant homes, when we are definitely your Stager and we’re just dropping in to see the layout and take some pictures and measurements, the fee is already rolled into the overall staging price.

    WHERE

We always meet at the space in question whether it is residential or commercial.  I am very visual and need to see what we’re actually working with.  We can do this in person or virtually.  We’ve done several consults where the client was out of state and we toured the home with them via Whats App.
When it comes to someone’s home they may have what they think is a priority where as we might suggest something different.  The lifestyle or use of space is the most important component going into any design or staging plan.

    WHEN

Always schedule a Consultation BEFORE you begin anything.  That includes all professionals and Designers.  Most pros like painters etc will offer free consults.  They pop in, discuss the scope of work, take measurements and will get back to you with a quote.  As mentioned most good Designers will charge for a Consultation so make sure you’re getting your monies worth.  You can usually screen over the phone like we do to see if we’re on the same page and can meet each other’s expectations.

    WHY

The obvious answer is to read the above.  Renovations, especially, will take months or even years depending on the scope of the project.  You want to make sure you like and respect the people you are working with.  Don’t hesitate to ask for credentials like licenses, diplomas, certifications and testimonials from past clients.  You will probably have looked at our website www.KerryFDecor.com and on-line portfolio to see if our brand matches your style.  You’ll want to work with people who have been through the process, can help you navigate it and who understand your vision, whether you are Staging to sell or Styling to stay.

    HOW

At Kerry F. Décor you can actually reach me by phone, any day between 9-5, except Sunday.  10 am – 2 pm on Saturday.  I answer all calls in person.  If I am not available I will get back to you within 24 hours.  (I won’t waste a lot of time going back and forth on emails and texts.)

Never hesitate to reach out with any questions, just have them all ready when we speak.  It’s OK if you’re not exactly sure where to start or what to do.  That is what we are here for!  Let us help you.  Schedule a Consultation.  It will be the least and best money you ever spent on your place!
